I worked on the Web Team, who were integrating the wider Co-op family of businesses’ core services into an in-house digital solution, after years of out-sourcing to agencies.

Presenting designs

Our first job was to migrate the old Co-op Food website to a new platform. I redesigned and restructured the Offers and Deals area, which had become bloated and mis-used. I spoke regularly with the Food team to untangle the various workarounds and hacks they had naturally built up over time, to get at their underlying needs and requirements. We Service-Mapped out the customer experience (both online and offline), from using the website to going into a Co-op shop and buying food and drink.

Along with other members of the design team, I was asked to help evolve Co-op’s visual design offering. We participated in workshops, put our explorations and ideas up on walls, discussed them with Co-op stakeholders, and established a fresh, coherent design language.

I created a set of design patterns and components to hold most of the content on the main Co-op site. They needed to be simple and versatile enough for the (non-creative, non-techy) Food Team to build visually harmonious pages in the CMS.

I also worked on the team redesigning the main Co-op homepage. Building on the work I’d done on the content components, we designed components to hold content from across the business in various layouts, depending on context (Seasonal Offers etc).

Co-op has an active design culture. The team held regular talks, workshops, presentations, and sessions. We experimented with various new UX techniques, discussed the latest theories, and critiqued each other’s work.
