I worked at Old Trafford for 18 months on a ‘global digital transformation’ for the club. Deliverables included a new website, apps (iOS, Android, mobile, tablet), and style-guide.

HCL are United’s digital partner. Working on their UX Team, and collaborating closely with United’s Product Team, I designed the Homepage, News & Video Listings, Articles, Cards, Matchday Experience, Modals, Videos, Stats, Collections, Carousels, and more.

I initially worked with United’s Head Of Design to establish the Art Direction of the project, selecting the fonts & how they would work with photography. The challenge was how to feel contemporary while not losing United’s sense of grand tradition and history.

After establishing that we would base the designs around the incredible stream of photography available to the editorial content team, I worked with them on designing a workflow that would get the best out of the imagery, whilst not adding too much time to their process. I designed a system where the content editor uploaded an image when creating an article or feature, cropped and exported it into various shapes and sizes (landscape, portrait, square), then combined it with text to advertise the article in various contexts.

We needed to show a lot of information at once, and for it to be easily scannable with no interactions necessary. The problem was that this produced a hard grid that looked a bit too rigid and repetitive. and early designs swamped the page with imagery, which wasn't good for page performance . I found a solution to both problems with the idea of using flat white/black text panels semi-randomly throughout the section, introducing some variation and life into the rigid grid. and would cut down on imagery, give clearer information if needed, and differentiate between a Feature and an Article.

I ran workshops with different stakeholders across the club (Tickets, Stadium, Editorial, etc) to understand their pain-points and needs, and designed their respective areas on the site.

Collections (App)

I designed a set of patterns and components with which the editors could build their own pages, articles, collections etc, and ran workshops with content editors on how to use them. This enabled them to be flexible enough to adapt to the widely differing demands of the footballing editorial year which was a major concern for them.

The site and app were very successful, in terms of fan response and advertising revenue. The app was the most downloaded free app in the world at one point, and won several awards.

I played (and still play) in the staff weekly 5-a-side team at Old Trafford. I play in my Liverpool shorts. I’m a Liverpool supporter.
